I write to you to express my deep concerns regarding the proposed abolition of the Permit System in the Northern Territory and urge you to vote against its inclusion in the proposed amendments to the Aboriginal Land Rights (N.T.) Act. Like all Australians I am deeply concerned about the current situation of many indigenous children. However, the welfare of these children must be kept separate from land rights. The permit system is fundamental to Aboriginal cultural survival and essential for appropriate, sustainable management of Aboriginal land. The permit system strengthens Indigenous communities rights to say who comes to their land. In 2006, when the government proposed to amend the permit system with their discussion paper about changes to the permit system the changes were opposed by these indigenous communities. The 1976 Northern Territory Land Rights Act was a landmark piece of legislation for Aboriginal Australia and has created a livelihood for many communities in the Northern Territory. Please do not turn back the clock to a pre-1976 Australia when indigenous communities had no land rights.
